Indian Institute of Geomagnetism is a premier research Institute in the country involved in the study of all aspects of Geomagnetism. It has strong research programmmes in the following three areas :

1. Observatory and Data Analysis

2. Upper Atmospheric Sciences

3. Solid Earth Geomagnetism

IIG has a number of active research groups involved in theoretical, experimental, and observational work. The Institute has a modern laboratory for design and fabrication of instruments used in Geomagnetism and allied fields. Geomagnetism is a multi-disciplinary science and thus provides research opportunities for Physicists, Geophysicists, and Earth Scientists. Geomagnetism, by its very nature, is also a global science, and often involves collaboration with scientists from other countries. The Institute supports a World Data Centre for Geomagnetism (WDC, Mumbai), which is the only International centre for Geomagnetic data in South Asia, and caters to the needs of Space and Earth Scientists and researchers from Universities

Doctoral Programme: IIG offers a five-year doctoral programme in Physics and in Geophysics/Earth Sciences, to students having consistently good academic record, with first or high second class M. Sc. degree in Physics or Mathematics for the Physics stream or in any of the following subjects for the Earth Science stream: Physics, Geophysics, or Geology. All applicants must have Physics as a subject at the B. Sc. Level. Candidates who have cleared either the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or the Joint CSIR UGC – JRF (NET) examination in Subject Code-2 (Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences) and Subject Code-5 (Physics Sciences) and also satisfy the eligibility criteria as per IIG norms shall be called for interview. For the Earth Science Stream, a separate written examination will be conducted by IIG for which application forms can be obtained from the Institute. The students will get registered for their PhD. degrees at the University of Mumbai, or, alternatively, at the Kolhapur or Pune Universities. The norms of the registration at respective universities are applied.
