Patot diya generally refers to food wrapped in banana leaves and then grilled or steamed.There are many different recipes that use this technique.

6-8 small fish(muwa,darikona)
1/2 teaspoon pepper corns(jaluk)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds(jeera)
1/2 tsp onion seeds(kaljeera)
1/2 teaspoon garlic paste
1/4 tsp turmeric
1 banana leaf *

Grind together pepper,cumin and onion seeds with a little water to make a fine paste.Add turmeric and garlic to the paste.Mix well.
Marinate fish in the paste and salt for 20 minutes
Place the marinated fish on the banana leaf(photo1)
Drizzle a teaspoon of mustard oil and fold to make a parcel.
Secure with toothpick (photo2)
Steam fish packets or grill on an iron griddle(tawa) over a gas fire,
turning the parcels over a couple of times and allowing the leaf to char as the fish cooks.

*How to prepare the banana leaf :
*Select long banana leaves with no splits. Trim the leaves along the central spine. Wash and lightly dry. With a stove burner on low, slowly draw the leaf across the flame, SHINY SIDE DOWN,for few seconds until pliable and easy to use.
