The cheerful, gregarious house sparrows, once commonly seen flitting around the neighborhood, are in real trouble and are vanishing from the center of many cities and rural areas. Their recent decline has put them on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List category.

The house sparrow is associated with humans since early childhood as it is generally the first bird we learn to identify. For many, the fascination of observing house sparrows leads to a lifelong association with birds and ornithology. No other bird is found in close proximity to humans like the house sparrow. House sparrows have been associated with folklore and songs for eons.

The house sparrow was one of the most abundant and common birds in the world. But like all other plants and animals, which were once abundant, their numbers are declining across their natural range. The reason for the decline of house sparrows has been one of the greatest mysteries of recent times.

The house sparrows are believed to be declining for various reasons ranging, from the destruction of its habitat to a lack of insects for young ones to the ever increasing microwave pollution from the mobile phone towers.

World Sparrow Day will focus on raising awareness on the decline of house sparrows and the problems faced by house sparrows in their day-to-day survival. In addition, World Sparrow Day will be held to celebrate and appreciate the importance of common biodiversity found around us.
