A leader is a person who has a vision, a drive and a commitment to achieve the vision and the skills to make it happen. A leader is the one who can generate new ideas and can inspire a whole generation and society into those ideals. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is one such leaders of the state of Assam who has brought marked qualitative change in the socio-economic and educational field of Assam.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is both an idealist as well as practitioner. Marx has said philosophers have interpreted the world—question is to change it. His vision is to conceptualize Assam in such a manner so that it can achieve all important parameters of Human development as envisaged by the United Nations and as implemented by the UPA government under the leadership of Madam Sonia Gandhi, Dr. Manmohan Singh and youth leader Rahul Gandhi. Having born in a middle class family of Assam, his father late Kailash Nath Sarma was a well known poet and novelist of Assam. His mother Smti. Mrinalini Devi is a literary personality actively associated with the Assam Sahitya Sabha. Sarma passed his High School Leaving Certificate examination from Kamrup Academy School, Guwahati in 1985 and joined Cotton College, Guwahati for further studies. He was General Secretary (GS) of Cotton College Union Society (CCUS) from 1991 to 1992. He did his graduation in 1990 and post graduation in 1992 in political science from the Cotton College, Guwahati. Sarma did LLB From Govt. Law College, Guwahati and obtained Ph.D degree from Gauhati University. He was practicing law at Gauhati High Court from 1996 to 2001. He is married to Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. The couple has two children Nandil & Sukanya. Sarma has served three terms as a MLA in Assam. He was elected from Jalukbari in 2001 and was re-elected in 2006 and 2011. Sarma has served in the Assam Government in various ministerial portfolios. He is the incumbent Health, Education & Assam Accord implementation minister in the ruling Congress Government.
